Overview

Hardwood Giant took on two new leases — one in Vancouver, one in Richmond — and needed both spaces turned from empty retail units into working flooring showrooms with staff areas behind them. Multigroup Contracting was the general contractor for both locations, running the projects back-to-back with the same crew so the second store benefited from everything learned on the first.

Scope

Showroom millwork

Full-height flooring display walls and sample racks built to show hardwood, laminate and vinyl ranges.

Lighting and electrical

New showroom lighting layout, with panels and circuits sized for display and back-of-house loads.

Partitions and back-of-house

Demising and partition walls, offices, staff areas and washrooms.

Front of house

Storefront, signage, ceiling and paint throughout.

The challenges

Both stores had committed launch dates, and the two builds ran back-to-back on new leases.

Fixed opening dates: both stores had committed launch dates, so the schedule was built backwards from opening day and material lead times were locked in before demolition started.

Two stores in sequence: the Richmond and Vancouver builds ran back-to-back, which kept one crew continuously on Hardwood Giant work and let the second store move faster than the first.

Permits and landlord approvals: each unit required its own municipal permit path and landlord tenant-improvement sign-off, coordinated so approvals landed before the trades needed them.

Outcome

Both showrooms opened on their committed dates as fully fitted retail spaces — display walls, lighting, offices, washrooms and storefront complete — on new leases that started as empty shells. The stores were closed to the public during construction, so the work ran at full pace without phasing around customers.
